Bad words

What, exactly, makes "fuck" more offensive than "fack"? Why is it the middle finger instead of the pinky that's so terribly shocking? For some reason, certain combinations of letters are utterly scandalous to people, and yet, we still have war, racism and homophobia (for starters). People find the strangest things to be offensive.

And it's pretty sad when the anachronistic Miss Manners says the most sensible thing in the whole article:
"Everybody is pretending they aren't shocked," Martin says, "and gradually people WON'T be shocked. And then those who want to be offensive will find another way."
Every day is incomplete until someone has been offended... that's my motto.
