And the National Book Award goes to...

The Echo Maker by Richard Powers. Haven't read it yet, but I did just read his second novel, Prisoner's Dilemma, which was marvelous. I can only assume that his latest is worth it as well.

Jason, I recommend Powers' novel "Gain." It alternates chapters detailing the founding of a Procter & Gamble style company by immigrants with the present-day story of a woman dying from industrial pollution caused by that company.

Yeah, I remember you telling me about that one. "Prisoner's Dilemma" was good enough to make me keep an eye out for his stuff. The one I keep hearing is very good is "The Gold Bug Variations." At the moment, though, I'm just starting "Gravity's Rainbow." It's going to take a while to get through that one.
