• A Syracuse woman is sentenced to jail for scamming would-be writers.

First fake writers, now fake publishers.

...As part of her guilty plea, Ivery admitted she defrauded clients from 1995 through 2002, either through her publishing company in Catskill or by posing as a literary agent named "Kelly O'Donnell."

When Ivery failed to follow through on promises to publish books, she told writers there were problems with illustrations, or computers, or, in one case, that the manuscript had been aboard one of the planes hijacked in the Sept. 11 attacks, prosecutors said.

Bunnies or bullets?

• Just in time for Easter, Norwegians are stocking up on crime novels.

Pithy commentary couldn't render this any more amusing:

Nobody knows when the Norwegian tradition of crime telling at Easter began, but their warrior ancestors -- the Vikings -- were renowned for raiding trips to the British Isles.

On their return the Vikings would settle down with flasks of mead, an alcoholic drink made from honey, and recount tales of murder and pillage to their women and children.

• A 300-year-old French ledger bound in human skin has turned up in England.

The Wikipedia entry on anthropodermic bibliopegy drily notes that the practice is "uncommon in modern times." I'm glad they cleared that up.
